The Melbourne Cup

Today we took the Mosman Ferry.   Erin and her fiancé Michael's grandmother, a lovely spry, funny lady, picked us up at the ferry dock.  Off we went to neighborhood pub for a Melbourne Cup lunch and party.   Flo and I had already placed our bets, and inadvertently ended up betting on the same horse, Protectionist.   After some great hors d'oeuvres and proseco, the seventh race, or the Melbourne Cup ran.   Apparently everyone in Australia stops what they are doing to watch this race!   Businesses close, every bar, pub and restaurant is full.  This is the major thoroughbred horse race, started in 1861.  Prize money this year was 6,200,000 AUD.

Well, we picked the winner and I won $56 and Flo won $6.   We were pretty happy!   What fun!

Following are pictures of the winner and of the lovely ladies we spent the afternoon with.
